Physiological Babywearing: Much More Than a Way to Get Around

14 April 2025

Physiological babywearing is far more than just a simple alternative to a pram. It is an ancestral practice that meets a fundamental need for closeness while respecting an infant's natural development.

What is Physiological Babywearing?

To carry "physiologically" means using a carrying system (wrap, sling, or an adapted soft-structured carrier) that respects the baby’s natural posture. Unlike traditional carriers where the child is suspended by the crotch, physiological carrying supports the pelvis and thighs.

The "M" Position (or Frog Position)

This is the essential reference point. In this position:

♦ The knees are higher than the bottom.

♦ The pelvis is tilted forward (retroverted).

♦ The back is naturally rounded, in a "C" shape.

♦ The hips are spread without force, promoting healthy hip development.

Benefits for Baby and Parent

Wearing your baby offers concrete advantages for the whole family:

♦ Emotional Security: By being held close to you, the baby rediscovers the sensations of life in the womb (rocking, warmth, heartbeat), which reduces stress and crying.

♦ Physical Health: The upright position aids digestion, helps with burping, and relieves colic or reflux (GERD). It also helps prevent flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly).

♦ Freedom of Movement: For the wearer, it ensures hands-free convenience while meeting the child’s needs. Properly distributed weight also protects the parent’s back.

Golden Rules for Safety

To carry with peace of mind, keep these three essential principles in mind:

  1. Clear Airways: The baby's face must always be visible. Their nose and mouth must not be covered by fabric. Their chin should be away from their chest (you should be able to fit two fingers between their chin and their chest).

  2. Close Enough to Kiss: The baby should be worn high enough so that you can kiss the top of their head without effort.

  3. Upright Position: This is the only recommended position to ensure proper breathing and correct support.

Physiological carrying is a wonderful tool for the transition from the womb to the world. It strengthens the bond of attachment and the sense of parental confidence. Don't hesitate to consult a babywearing consultant to learn the right knots and find the tool that suits you best.
